Every Minecraft host sells the same three numbers — RAM, CPU and player slots — and every one of them means something slightly different. Here's how to read a plan properly, how much you actually need for vanilla, Paper and heavy modpacks, and the specs that decide whether your server runs at 20 TPS or turns into a slideshow on Saturday night.

How much RAM you actually need

RAM is the number hosts price on, so it's the number people over-think. Minecraft doesn't use RAM per player so much as per loaded chunk, per entity and per mod. A rough working guide:

Buying more RAM than you need doesn't make the server faster — Java's garbage collector can actually pause longer with a huge oversized heap. Match the pack, then upgrade if you see memory-related lag.

CPU is the spec that decides your TPS

Minecraft's main tick loop is essentially single-threaded. That means 20 slow cores lose to 4 fast ones. When a host lists "Ryzen 9 7950X" or "9950X" they're telling you their nodes have high single-thread clocks — that's the good signal. Vague listings like "high performance CPU" or "Intel Xeon" usually mean older, cheaper silicon shared between a lot of servers.

Also check whether the plan quotes a CPU limit (e.g. 200% = two cores). Redstone farms, mob grinders and world pre-generation all hammer the tick loop; a hard 100% cap will show up as TPS drops long before RAM runs out.

Player slots: guidance, not a guarantee

Hosts handle slots in two ways. Slot-based plans charge per concurrent player and are simple but usually poor value. RAM-based plans give you unlimited slots and quote a recommended player count — which assumes vanilla-ish gameplay, moderate view distance and no huge farms.

  • • Cutting view distance from 10 to 6 can nearly double how many players a box handles.
  • • Entity-heavy builds cost more than extra players ever will.
  • • "Unlimited slots" on a 2GB plan is marketing — the RAM is still the ceiling.

Server location and ping

Latency matters more in Minecraft than in most web workloads: block placement, hit registration and elytra flight all feel wrong past ~150ms. Choose the region where most of your players live.

  • Under 50ms — indistinguishable from local.
  • 50–100ms — perfectly playable, fine for survival and PvE.
  • 150ms+ — noticeable rubber-banding, painful for PvP.

Price-per-GB: the honest metric

Divide the monthly price by the RAM to compare plans across hosts. Anything around $2–$4 per GB on modern Ryzen hardware with NVMe and backups is a fair deal in 2026. Much cheaper usually means oversold nodes; much more expensive should come with premium CPUs, generous CPU limits and hands-on support.

Then check the renewal price, whether backups and extra ports are billed separately, and whether the host bills monthly or forces a quarterly/annual term to hit the advertised rate.

Should I self-host on my own PC instead?

Only for a short LAN session. Self-hosting means your machine has to stay on, your home upload bandwidth caps concurrent players, port forwarding exposes your home IP to DDoS, and there's no backup if the drive dies. Paid hosting starts around the price of a coffee per month for a small server.
